Review of the short film THE CHAIR
By Curtis Alexander
The short film THE CHAIR is interesting to me for many reasons, interesting enough to have paid $2.99 on iTunes to watch it….in HD no less (which costs an extra dollar, BTW).
Find out why after the jump.

Obstacles principal photography starts today
Today we begin shooting Geeta Sehgal’s short film, currently entitled OBSTACLES. The short is about a woman having to overcome some—possibly irrational—fears to get to the museum to meet her friend.

The Edmonton Media Co’s STARTUPS pilot
Posted by Curtis Alexander
Sally Poulsen and Jeff Samsonow of The Edmonton Media Co. have recently put up their pilot episode of STARTUPS.
They also have a post about what they learned about writing, directing, producing while working on this project. They even talk about how they decided to scale back a bit in terms of just shooting the pilot first, and not the entire “season” of Startups.

#yegfilm April 2013 Meeting

#yegfilm April 2013 Meeting
Last meeting was great (read about it here) but some of the Edmonton Cinecoup teams have setup an event on the same night as #yegfilm’s next scheduled meeting night—Wednesday, April 24th.
Given that the location of the cinecoup related event—the Yellowhead Brewery (which is downtown, not by the Yellowhead)—is only 100 yards from #yegfilm’s usual spot we’re going to move the #yegfilm meeting to essentially be the Cinecoup event, and then next month we’ll head back to our usual time, space, and agenda. It’s always a good idea to support local filmmakers!
UPDATE! Also note that the FAVA AGM is that night as well, starting at 6:30PM!

Cinematography of fear: The dolly zoom
Posted by Curtis Alexander
For Geeta Sehgal’s short film, working title OBSTACLES, the main character has a fear of heights.
As the cinematographer for the short, it’s my job to make sure that the shots—the style, the look—of the film accurately represent what the director wants to portray, and also how the cinematography can help show what the characters are feeling, or perhaps what the audience should feel.
A well known, borderline cliche, shot that is often used to indicate a fear of heights, or vertigo!, is the dolly zoom!

Pre-production for “Obstacles” short film
By Geeta Sehgal
I’m excited to be working with a group of #yegfilmmakers on a short film, working title “Obstacles.” The story follows a woman who tries to overcome her fear of heights—on a bridge, hundreds of feet over a busy highway.
YEG Filmmakers live event

YEG filmmakers live event
On Saturday, April 6th, 4:30PM - 6PM, Bearded Chicken is presenting an event regarding growing the Edmonton filmmaking community.
There is a large number of people in Edmonton making films at all levels, and it would be great if we could start connecting all these people together, or at the very least, find a way to let everyone know what everyone else is doing, whether that is through something like the #yegfilm blog, or another way.
